The best time to visit is during the trade winds season, which lasts from April to September. The strongest winds generally occur in June, July, and early August, with the first half of July being considered the best. Many locals also recommend April as a lesser-known month for great wind conditions, when the wind blows more consistently and with better quality.
Alisios (Trade Winds): These are the most consistent and frequent winds, especially during spring and summer, particularly in July. They usually blow from the North-Northeast. The acceleration zone is Costa Teguise, where the wind intensifies in the afternoons between Matagorda and Costa Teguise. High-pressure conditions often result in reliable forecasts from sources like Windguru and Winfinder.
Southern Winds (5-SW): These winds, with a southern component, typically occur when there is a depression to the west of the Canary Islands. They bring rain and create rough seas, making navigation difficult. These winds are more common in autumn and winter but are not frequent.
Siroco (Southeast African Winds): These winds are hot and dusty, common in autumn and winter but almost nonexistent in summer. The east coast of Lanzarote experiences lower intensity, but the west coast (Farnaral) can feel stronger winds. Forecasting for these winds is less reliable.
Northern Winds (N-NW): When depressions are higher, these winds can come from the North, varying in intensity. They bring fresh winds, occasional rain, and clear skies with excellent visibility and stunning sunsets.
Lanzarote is truly a paradise for windsurfing enthusiasts of all levels, offering exceptional conditions for an unforgettable experience.
