The Jameos del Agua are located in the north of the island, in the municipality of Haría, next to the Cueva de los Verdes, in the heart of Malpaís de la Corona. Its formation was caused by the advance of the lava emanating from the volcano more than 3000 years ago. It is part of the same complex and therefore has the same origin as the Cueva de los Verdes.
Los Jameos del Agua is a creation of César Manrique,
opened its doors to the public in 1966 and constitutes an impressive underground oasis in which we can find:
- In the first section, towards the sea, the origin of the part
submerged part of the Los Jameos Volcanic Tube, which runs under the
seabed along more than 1.5 km. It is known for the Tunnel of the
Atlántida and holds the record for length in underwater caving.
- Then we find the natural lagoon with a volcanic ceiling, created
by the filtrations of the sea, of calm and transparent waters, in whose interior
inhabited by tiny blind crabs (Munidopsis polymorpha), true
jewels of zoology, white.
- Going outside again, we find a new jameo, a large garden, dotted with abundant and varied
vegetation, in which there is a swimming pool
artificial perfectly integrated into an environment.
- From there we can access, on the one hand, the Jameos de Agua Auditorium and on the other,
You go up to some wide terraces that give way to the House of the Volcanoes.
The careful selection of background music is another aspect to highlight in the Center.
