Cueva de los Verdes

Cueva de los Verdes

Located next to the Jameos del Agua, next to the road to the north coast of Lanzarote that takes us to the town of Órzola, in the municipality of Haría and integrated into the area called Malpaís de la Corona, originated due to the volcanic eruptions of the Volcán de la Corona more than 3000 years ago.

The Cueva de los Verdes was formed due to the advance of the lava emanated by said volcano, forming an enormous volcanic tube of more than 6 km in length on land, and more than 1 km under the seabed.  It is one of the largest volcanic tunnels in the world, of which the Jameos del Agua are also part, as well as other caves that must be visited at your own risk, since they are not enabled for your comfortable enjoyment.

The Cueva de los Verdes was used by the ancient inhabitants of Lanzarote as an impregnable refuge from the attacks of the pirates who regularly attacked the island, in order to make slaves or take hostages to ask for a ransom in exchange for their release.

Since 1964, the year in which it was refurbished and opened to the public, it can be visited through a comfortable one-hour tour through the 2km enabled. It is done inside accompanied by a guide, who explains the characteristics of the cave in several languages.

During the tour you can appreciate the numerous and varied shapes left by the passage of lava, such as the small stalactites caused by its incessant dripping over the centuries.

Inside the temperature is constant and very pleasant and together with the ambient music that we find throughout the entire route, it makes the tour a moment for relaxation and  enjoy.

Also inside the Cueva de los Verdes, we can find an auditorium, in which outstanding cultural activities take place, especially musical ones, given the exceptional acoustics of the enclosure as a result of its volcanic origin .

Where is it

Formation

A stream of incandescent lava, very fluid, runs through the interior of a previously formed lava flow that has not yet reached an advanced degree of solidification.

There comes a time when the outer surface... petrifies due to the effect of cooling produced by the air... thus forming the roof. Once the contents of the interior are emptied due to the cessation of the lava emission, these characteristic caves are finally constituted...†-
