Eagle Tower/Castle

Eagle Tower/Castle

Located on the coast of Papagayo, la Torre de las Coloradas or Castillo del Águila was built. It was built in 1741 to protect the Rubicon area against possible pirate attacks, but it was raided and burned in the Algerian invasion of 1749. It was rebuilt in 1769, as the commemorative plaque that can still be read on its facade.

The Castle of Las Coloradas was raised on the remains of the Rubicon Tower. They were remnants of the first European settlements in the Canary Islands, around the year 1402, and of which, today, there is a very important archaeological site.

It is built in quarry stone, lime and tea wood. With a circular floor plan and a belfry at the top, the access was closed with a drawbridge. It has capacity for 10 armed gunners, two iron cannons and light artillery.

Inside it, there was a bedroom for the soldiers who lived in it, three rooms, a warehouse to store gunpowder, a dungeon and two cisterns for water.

Its architect, Claudio de Lisle, built it in in a strategic place, from where you can see a wide area of the sea. They can be seen from there. all the coves of Papagayo, the Rubicón Coast, the open sea to Isla de Lobos, the Bocaina Strait and the Island of Fuerteventura.

Currently it is in a good state of conservation and closed; you cannot visit inside. There has always been an intention to enable it for exhibition, but until now this dream of many lovers of history has not yet been fulfilled. However, you can visit the outside and enjoy the views it offers.
