Pechiguera Lighthouse

The Pechiguera Lighthouse located at the end SW of Lanzarote, on the coast of the municipality of Yaiza, located as its name indicates in Punta de Pechiguera, arises from a Royal Order of the National Government as an integral part of the Birth Plan of the Canary Islands of 1856. Such a project comes to auction for its construction on April 12, 1861, five years later, on July 1, 1866, it was inaugurated, operating for about one hundred and twenty years, at which time a new tower was built.

The building has a rectangular floor plan and is organized around a central courtyard. It contains a house with three bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen and office. The body of the tower is cylindrical, made of basalt masonry. The saltpeter has not stopped attacking the wood, iron and walls of this building, which is why it is currently threatened with ruin.

The old lighthouse was declared a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) by the Government of the Canary Islands on December 20, 2002.

The lantern is at a height of 15.6 m., its light being seen 12 miles away
