Los Ajaches Natural Monument

Los Ajaches Natural Monument

Declared a Natural Site of National Interest in 1987 and a Natural Monument in 1994. Los Ajaches, in the south of Lanzarote, constitute a volcanic massif, about 7.5 kilometers long and with an area of 3,009 hectares, of aesthetic and landscape relevance, the richest and most important of the Canary Islands

It is also of great scientific interest and forms a representative geomorphological unit of ancient volcanic buildings built and modeled in climatic conditions different from the current one. It has sectors of scientific interest as it houses paleontological sites with the presence of lower Pliocene fossil forms.

But without a doubt what is most striking is the combination of a landscape of high peaks with peaks up to 560 meters high, such as La Aceituna  or The Big Axes and Girl, with ravines and cliffs that end up at some of the most beautiful beaches on the island such as the Papagayo Beaches (Women Beach, Papagayo Beach, Playa de la Cruz or del Pozo, Puerto Muelas, Caleta del Congrio).

The oldest roads and trails in the Canary Islands are also located and you can make some routes through the network of trails of Los Ajaches, following the coast or going inland and to the town of Femés.

Flora and fauna

Among the flora there are leafy populations of gorse and grasses and as for the f auna, the majorera lizard, kestrels, blue tits…
