Natural enarenados

Natural enarenados

They are located in areas close to recent volcanoes, where the lapilli covers the pre-existing topsoil. The fact that the thickness of the ash is highly variable makes cultivation difficult, requiring a thickness that oscillates between 0.2 and 2 meters.

Crops that can accommodate these enarenados must have a deep root system that allows them to cross the lapilli layer. For this reason, the dominant crop is usually the vine and, to a lesser extent, the fig tree and other fruit trees.

The preparation of the cultivation land consists of opening holes or calderas 1.25 meters deep, until reaching the paleosoil. In the background a vineyard or fruit tree is planted. One hectare of sanding can host between 250 and 300 plants. The holes or calderas are protected with small stone walls that are located perpendicular to the direction of the prevailing winds. In this way it has been possible to cultivate in a very xerophilous environment, with strong evaporation and high insolation, locating these crops in the most arid part of the island, resulting in one of the best known and spectacular landscapes, such as the aforementioned La Geria.
