Maciot

Maciot

Maciot is a small hamlet located between Femés and Las Breñas and is located on the western slopes of the mountain of Los Ajaches sheltered by the round peak massif and Big Ax, of the Los Ajaches Natural Monument.

What to see

This town, which was born in the 15th century, still preserves the Casa Rural de los Ajaches, which historically was the Maciot de Bethencourt (hence the name of the town), nephew and lieutenant of Jean de Bethencourt, the first conqueror of Lanzarote and the other Canary Islands

Currently, despite having undergone various interventions over the centuries, they have not undermined its historical value. The house constitutes a representative example of the traditional domestic architectural typology. Built with stone and mud walls and a flat roof. Preserves the thickness of the walls in all dependencies of the property.

Also in the area, the red color of the so-called Caldera de Maciot stands out, with a capricious scale of colors resulting from the erosion and excavations in said mountain, which has been used as a quarry for the use of «picón» in the Canarian gardens.

In Maciot there are hiking trails for fans of this sport.

Where is it

Maciot de Bethencourt

Nobleman of Norman origin, had come to Lanzarote  in the second expedition that arrived to the island with new settlers and after the departure of Juan de Bethencourt to France he represented on the island the continuity of the power of the Normans. Relations between Maciot de Béthencourt and the Majos were established in a way similar to that practiced by his uncle, with the consequent distribution of land, although his despotic character led to him being accused of unjustly enslaving many of the islanders.
