Barcos hundidos

Very popular place for divers ideal for all levels of diving with depths from 18 to 40 meters, it can be reached by boat or from land. It is a highly demanded dive by divers visiting Lanzarote for the first time.

A recommended dive for lovers of wrecks. There are about six wooden boats located in front of the small town of Puerto del Carmen that rest on a stepped bottom. Interestingly, the ones found at less depth are the best preserved and one of them even protrudes from under the rocks of the pier's own breakwater.  The wreck located further east still retains its large propeller over 38 m depth.

Marine Life

Among the remains we will find typical cave animals such as rockfish, alfonsitos and even catalufas. In addition, there is a very abundant fauna of angel sharks, galanas, sargos, fulas, amberjacks and many tropical fish. It's also a perfect place to see barracuda, whether it's schools of juveniles drifting over the boats, or solitary adult hunters.

We recommend paying special attention to the sand because it is easy to see mongrels, mantelinas, sea eagles, torpedoes and angelsharks.

A bit of history

In the 1980s, the Lanzarote sardine fishing fleet underwent a reconversion and the artisanal fishing vessels were dismantled and waited in port to be converted into wrecks at very deep levels.

A group of divers from the Avalon club thought of turning these wreck fishing boats into affordable levels for recreational diving. Once the permits were obtained and the ships were freed of polluting substances, they were sunk.

The area chosen was Puerto del Carmen, giving it the name "Underwater Park of the Hedgehogs", although today it is better known as "The Sunken Ships".
